You Gotta Try New Foods 'Cause They Might Taste Good

If you have never watched Daniel Tigers Neighborhood, its a newer PBS show that is based off the old Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, which I grew up with and liked. Mona has watched quite a few episodes of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood off Amazon Prime lately. There happens to be an episode on season 2 about being a vegetable taster. The show is great because it has age-appropriate, positive messages that always have a song paired along with it too. Mona loves music and these songs are always short and catchy. Anyway the vegetable taster show has a song that goes: "You gotta try new food 'cause it might taste good, good!"

Mona, being really good with lyrics, memorized this jingle in no time and started singing it all over the place. The same episode's story line consists of Daniel and his little friends trying veggies that grow in a garden, and a real-life segment about a boy making "banana swirl" (frozen bananas blended up and put in an ice cream cone--its actually good!). So Mona has been obsessed with this idea and has taken to getting everything out of our produce drawers in the kitchen and trying them. In fact, later that day I took her grocery shopping because we happened to need a lot of produce. Mona loooved counting the apples, bananas, onions, tomatoes, salad bags into the produce bags and into the cart. It was a really fun grocery trip and she was so perfectly behaved, which was a big plus.

Then later that day we made banana swirl together just like they did in the episode. It was one of those really great parenting moments/days where everything just came together so beautifully and Mona really understood it so well, it just clicked. Now, a few days later, she plays with her play kitchen (something she hasn't done a lot up till now) and makes all sorts of meals for us all the time. She also picks 4 or 5 different items from our produce drawers every meal and tries them all. Today for breakfast, along with some butternut squash muffins I made, she tried radishes, salad, carrots, oranges and grapes.

Up untill just a few days ago, Mona has always liked alot of fruits and carbs but as far as meat has only ever eaten chicken nuggets and as far as veggies only carrots and cucumbers. Its been such a blessing to have her so interested in trying foods. Even though it can be kind of a pain sometime with having her get so much stuff out of the fridge and never put it back, I just really cant' complain. She is really such a fun, beautiful, sweet girl. I have been having so much fun with her lately. And Holden boy, but he eats everything (like his Mom) and this post is really about her.
